about

“My fascination with the piano arises from its ability to layer sound, creating illusions of depth, distance, and perspective,” writes pianist and composer Daniel Pesca. The works on Promontory showcase Pesca’s sensitivity of touch and immense dynamic range in service of the evocation of landscape. Comprising premiere recordings of works by Augusta Read Thomas, Aaron Travers, Alison Yun-Fei Jiang, and Pesca, the album tours environments ranging from the wild, remote shores of Nova Scotia to the bustle and energy of Chicago.

Like stories in an anthology, each work on the album is a unique journey. Named for a park near the composer’s home in Bloomington, Indiana, Travers’s explosive Olcott Park considers the way the COVID-19 pandemic transformed our most familiar, beloved spaces. Jiang’s powerful triptych Isles summons the harsh climate of Cape Breton, veering between the beautiful and the violent, as depicted by Canadian author Alistair MacLeod. Thomas’s Bell Illuminations, the newest addition to her significant output for piano, traces a long crescendo from the fog of the opening to the brilliant, virtuosic clarity of the last page — ”as if several bell-tower carillons were optimistically ringing at the same time,” writes Thomas.

Pesca’s Watercolors deploy fiendishly difficult virtuoso techniques to sketch two contrasting images: the lightness and whimsy of a pair of cats at play, and the craggy, difficult terrain of a mountain hike. The album concludes with his suite Hyde Park Boulevard, whose movements capture the sights and sounds of the storied Chicago neighborhood where Pesca spent the pandemic lockdown. “Making this music enabled me to travel in sound and to reflect on the beauty of our planet at a time when it is changing rapidly, perhaps irreversibly,” writes Pesca.

According to Thomas, Daniel Pesca is “world-class . . . His profound musicality and intellect allied to his phenomenal technical skill, sensitivity, sense of touch, color, rhythm, phrasing, allied to his work-ethic and finally then allied to his spirit and generosity, make him an artist to be treasured.”
